The Freedom of Information (FoI) Act 2000 was introduced to promote greater openness and accountability across the public sector. A school publication scheme is a FoI requirement. From January 2005 any individual will have the legal right to ask a school to have access to information held by that school. I specialise in providing schools with solutions. I ensure any individual will be able to access public information on your own website, so that you are in compliance with the Freedom of Information Act. You will be able to maintain your school website yourself using a simple username and password login. In fact, it is so simple, maintenance could even be delegated to a pupil!
If there is some information, you do not wish to make openly available to the public, but may need to provide access on a case by case basis, you can restrict access that information to a particular email address and password for a certain period of time. Case Study : Cornagague Primary School, Co Fermanagh. | Cornagague Primary School began looking at the best way to comply with the Freedom Of Information Act in August 2004. Rather than reacting and waiting for requests to come in concerning school information, Cornagague contacted Illand.co.uk for advice on the best way to publish information about the Primary School. | |
We worked closely with Cornagague Primary School to determine what sort of information they wished to publish and who their target audience was. In October 2004, Cornagague Primary School provided Illand.co.uk with much documentation in paper and electronic format, which we organised into a coherent structure, suitable for presentation on the internet. Illand.co.uk then developed the website into a user friendly structure, with all content added. Paper documentation was scanned in and converted into editable text. The functionality of the website enabled teachers to have access to content unavailable to the general public. As well as providing structured documentation to the public, Cornagague now also had a centralised repository of school information, which would enable consistency in documentation storage going forward. In January 2005, Cornagague went live with the website. We also registered the domain name cornagague.com. Each teacher was allocated an email address which they could access via a web browser from any internet connected PC (similar to a Hotmail account). Each class was also provided with an email address, so that children within the classroom could use the schools email system to send work via email, under the teacher’s supervision. Once the website was live, Illand.co.uk provided a 2 hour training session to show each teacher in the school how they could go in and update their schools website and use their email to good effect.
